Imagine being able to stay at home with your kids and still earn money in your spare time.

Imagine being able to earn money from something that you love doing.

Imagine turning your hobby into a viable business.

Tech editing has turned all of these dreams into a reality for me. I got started tech editing shortly after my first child was born. I was a stay-at-home-mom trying to find a way to earn a bit of income without needing to spend money on childcare. In the early days, I would put my son in the sling so he could sleep and do my edits standing up. That was all the free time I had. By the time he was 11 months old (and now napping in his own bed) I had built up my business into a real source of income. Most of my learning experience was trial-by-fire but over the years I have gained experience working with magazines, book publishers, and hundreds of designers.

Now I want to create a better path for those of you just starting out tech editing.

If you want to become a tech editor, there isn't a clear path. You could do a lot of trial-and-error and read a lot of incomplete posts about it and try to convince designers to hire you. But if limited time holds you back, I want to help.

With my course, you can become a tech editor that designers trust in a few hours a week.

Through the lessons and assignments I will teach you the basic editing skills you need to start out as a tech editor. You will know how much to charge and how much work you can fit in your schedule. You will be able to start earning money from something you are really enthusiastic about.

No matter how much you have going on in your life, you can fit in my tech editing course and get the skills and tools that you need to create a new career path for yourself.

The course will cover:

  • How to use a style sheet and check that a pattern conforms.
  • Basic pattern checks — the first things you should go through when you get a pattern and how to check accessories.
  • Advanced checks — how to check garments, socks, lace shawls, charts, etc.
  • Tech-etiquette — covering things like how to make your edits and relay them to the designer, how long should edits take, what might you want to charge for an hourly rate, etc.

What you get:

  • 6 written lessons
  • 6 assignments with answer sheets
  • 6 videos walking you through the assignment
  • Bonus material and videos covering the most frequently asked questions
